Program:
William Byrd: Mass for Five Voices

The Vocalconsort Berlin, founded in 2003, stands out for its culture of luxurious sound, effortless virtuosity and astonishing homogeneity. Fully adaptable in its membership and repertoire, the group has consciously decided against the appointment of a principal conductor and has become firmly established as one of the most sought-after German chamber choirs. The Vocalconsort now turns its artistry to the »Mass for Five Voices«, the greatest of the three masses written by William Byrd and a high point of the art of composition in the English Renaissance. Byrd, a Gentleman of the Chapel Royal from 1572, was along with Dowland certainly one of the most significant composers during the reign of Elizabeth I — and a fervent Catholic in the distinctly Protestant England of the late 16th century. He boldly professed his faith throughout his whole life, defying the risks and denunciations. This mass, which perhaps for this reason makes such an impassioned impression, will be supplemented by sequences from Byrd’s »Cantiones Sacrae« and the motet collection »Gradualia«; they prove Byrd to be the peer of such contemporary fellow composers as Orlando di Lasso or Giovanni Palestrina.
