Programme:
Ludwig van Beethoven: Violin concert D Major op. 61
Hector Berlioz: Symphonie fantastique op. 14a

In keeping with the constant philosophy of the Festival, an orchestra that is one of the groundbreaking “Independents” will be the guests of the finale: the Aurora Orchestra. Founded by Nicholas Collon in 2005, it has long enjoyed the reputation in its British homeland of being a booster shot of vitamins for the world of classical music. This is in no small part because Aurora astounds audiences with performances during which conductor and orchestra play entire works from memory while standing — as they will here as well, when they present one of the definitive monumental works of the 19th century: Hector Berlioz’s Symphonie fantastique. This approach to music performance, which makes intense demands on every member of the orchestra, inspires a common spirit that will certainly meet Leonidas Kavakos more than halfway. The Greek star violinist, renowned for the silvery shimmer of the sound from his powerfully radiant »Willemotte« Stradivarius, is the personification of unique quality at the highest technical level and outstanding musicality. His performance of Beethoven’s Violin Concerto, one of the key works that made a long-lasting impression on Berlioz, will set a high bar indeed for the upcoming festival year celebrating the 250th birthday of the composer from Bonn — what a tremendous finish!
