Programme:
Christoph Graupner: »Antiochus and Stratonica«

One would be hard pressed to find an ensemble that has rescued such a large number of baroque operas from oblivion as the Boston Early Music Festival Orchestra. This journey of discovery now continues with Christoph Graupner’s »Antiochus und Stratonica«. This heart-breaking tragedy is set in ancient Persia and tells the story of Prince Antiochus, who falls hopelessly in love with Stratonica, only to discover that his father, King Seleucus, has just married the enchanting beauty. The world premiere of the opera in 1708 was in Hamburg’s Oper am Gänsemarkt, the first privately-run municipal opera house on German soil. The musical directors Paul O’Dette and Stephen Stubbs, winners of two Grammy Awards, will bring this baroque jewel full of fascinating drama, absurd interludes and stirring music to new life in a concertante performance with internationally renowned singers and instrumentalists!
