»Praga Magna« – Music in Prague during the regency of the emperor Kaiser Rudolf the 2nd.
Philippe de Monte: Missa super Confitebor tibi Domine
and music of Alessandro Orologio, Orlando di Lasso, Liberale Zanchi, Carl Luython, Salomone Rossi and Nikolaus Zangius

After the Habsburg Emperor Rudolf II moved his residence from Vienna to Prague in 1583, the Bohemian metropolis became a cultural centre of the late Renaissance. The Cappella Mariana is at home in Prague; the group has specialised in the early polyphony of the Middle Ages, the vocal polyphony of the Renaissance and the vocal compositions of the early baroque period. Their programme »Praga Magna« takes the audience back into the time when Prague rose to become a European residence city of the highest order. The core of the performance will be the eight-voice Missa Confitebor tibi Domine of the court kapellmeister Philippe de Monte (1521–1603), the last great composer of Franco-Flemish polyphony. The parts of the mass will be interwoven with vocal and instrumental music of composers such as Alessandro Orologio, Carl Lython or Nikolaus Zangius to heighten the dramatic tension. They were also employed for a time in the services of Rudolf II and round off this unique insight into the heyday of imperial court music in Prague.
