Joseph Haydn: String Quartet in D major, Op. 20/4 Hob. III: 34
Leoš Janáček: String Quartet No. 1 »Kreutzer Sonata«
Johannes Brahms: String Quartet No. 3 in B flat major, Op. 67

Breathtaking precision and an assured style combined with vivacious spontaneity – these are the outstanding qualities of the Quatuor Ebène, which have secured it a top position among the world's leading string quartets for years. With Haydn, Brahms and Janácek, the programme offers an impressive overview of 150 years of music history. Haydn's highly ingenious 1772 quartet in D major is still one of his most popular to this day. The quartet’s style, with its clarity and wit, was also unmistakably the inspiration for Brahms' third string quartet. Much more melodic than his two previous quartets, it is characterized by playful charm and light-hearted cheer. Completely different is Janácek's first string quartet, which was inspired by Leo Tolstoy's mysterious novella »Kreutzersonata«, about a broken marriage that ends in murder: in this drama, the build-up to a catastrophe is predestined without words from the first note. It could have been made for the innovative Quatuor Ebène, who thanks to their seemingly telepathic understanding of one another never shy away from risk!
