After his apprenticeship with Arp Schnitger, Christian Vater set up his own workshop in his hometown of Hanover in 1702. Schnitger’s talented journeyman instilled the ingenious spirit of his teacher into over 80 instruments he built between Amsterdam and the Lüneburger Heide. The instrument at Bockhorn with 19 stops on 2 manuals and pedal was first played by Vater himself “for the glory of God” for its consecration on 25 December 1722. The French organist, harpsichordist and pianoforte specialist Maude Gratton presents a “Tour d’horizon” through the repertoire of the north German organ school on the organ that was extensively renovated in 2018. The arc stretches over more than 100 years, from Michael Praetorius, one of Germany’s most imaginative early Baroque composers, to the seminal Hamburg Jacobi organist Mattias Weckmann, to Dieterich Buxtehude’s favourite student wo died young, Nicolaus Bruhns.
