Heinrich Schütz: Excerpts from »Psalmen Davids«, »Kleine Geistliche Konzerte I«, »Symphoniae sacrae I« and other works
Giovanni Gabrieli: Canzon IV à 6 and Canzon XV à 10 (from: Canzoni et sonate à 3-22, 1615)

November marks the 350th anniversary of the death of Heinrich Schütz, the first German composer of European standing. He is considered the most important representative of 17th century protestant church music, which was heavily influenced by Italian (Catholic!) composers. The young Schütz studied in Venice from 1609 to 1612 with the help of a scholarship. In what was then the hotbed of groundbreaking musical developments, he became acquainted with progressive Italian music with its innovative style and performance practice, such as the magnificent polychoral compositions by the organist of St. Mark's, Giovanni Gabrieli. After his return, he integrated what he experienced there into the German musical tradition during his long time as Kapellmeister at the electoral Saxon court in Dresden. Impressive proof of how a European identity was already being shaped by widespread connections in the music world. Experience the revealing juxtaposition of student and teacher in this extensive programme created exclusively for the Arp Schnitger Festival - of course including the magnificent Schnitger organ!
