Programme:
Maurice Ravel: Alborada del gracioso, Georges Bizet: »Carmen« Suite No. 1, excerpts from »Carmen«, Duke Ellington: »Harlem«, Leonard Bernstein: »West Side Story« Suite No. 1
In the Paris of the Belle Époque, Spanish flavours were the height of fashion. So Maurice Ravel picked them up in »Alborada del gracioso« (Morning Song of the Jester). As part of his piano cycle »Miroirs«, the orchestral version became even more popular than the original. The epitome of »Spain-fever« was, of course, Georges Bizet's »Carmen« from 1875. Tragically, the composer did not live to see his opera's worldwide triumph: three months after its premiere, he succumbed to a heart attack at the age of 36. Leonard Bernstein achieved a comparable success in American musical history with his »West Side Story«, which premiered in 1957. Based on Shakespeare's »Romeo and Juliet«, the rival New York gangs »Sharks« and »Jets« are pitted against each other. Caught between the fronts, Tony and Maria dream of a future together - in vain! When Marko Letonja and the Bremer Philharmoniker devote themselves to these two heartbreaking love stories, the shimmering heat of Andalusia becomes as tangible in the Glocke as the air vibrating with tension on the Upper West Side!
