Programme:
Sergei Prokofjew: Piano concert No. 3 C major op. 26, Symphony No. 5 B major op. 100

Estimated concert duration 80 minutes

Expectations were high when Teodor Currentzis was named as chief conductor of the new SWR symphony orchestra, starting from the 2018/19 season, following the merger of the Stuttgart symphony orchestra with the SWR orchestra in Baden Baden and Freiburg! From the reactions of the orchestra, audiences and critics alike, it is clear that the Greek conductor did not disappoint, and thanks to Currentzis’ affinity to Russian culture, the prospect to work on this repertoire with him was especially interesting. Sergei Prokofiev, the enfant terrible of the already progressive early 20th century Russian music scene, returned to his home country after an extended stay in America and Europe from 1918 to 1936. In 1921 he finished his 3rd piano concerto, a work that calls for a high degree of virtuosity, which Yulianna Adeeva, winner of the 2010 Warsaw Chopin Contest, is bound to deliver in full. When he wrote his 5th Symphony, the composer attempted to create something positive to counter the chaos of war, calling it a symphony »glorifying the grandeur of the human spirit« – perfect for the laureate of the 2019 »Musikfest-Preis« and his orchestra, with their unconditional love for and total dedication to music.
