Symphony No. 1 in C major op. 21
Symphony No. 2 in D major op. 36
Symphony No. 3 in E flat major op. 55 »Eroica«

Although there are drafts for a first symphony dating back to Beethoven’s time in Bonn, he only composed his first symphonic work in 1799, at the age of 29 in Vienna. The influences of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart and Joseph Haydn are still clearly recognisable, but already Beethoven marks the unmistakable start of a new musical century with his bold and provocative ideas. In 1801/02 he composed his second Symphony, which according to his contemporaries exhibited »an exaggerated striving for novel and surprising effects«. With it Beethoven continued his path as moderniser of the genre, finally reaching a new turning point with the »Eroica«. While critics who attended its premiere in 1805 still wrote of »bizarrerie« and »disorderliness«, just two years later the third symphony would be celebrated as the »greatest, most original, most artful and at the same time most interesting of all symphonies«.
