The organ in the St. Willehadi Church in Scharmbeck, completed in 1734, was built by Erasmus Bielfeldt, who took over Schintger’s organ workshop in Stade after his death. As the most complete instrument with the best preserved sound from the immediate Schnitger school, it is today one of the most important historical organs from the time of Bach and Handel in the north of Germany. And so Edoardo Bellotti puts the latter at the centre of his programme. At the end of 1706, the young Handel left for Italy to find crucial new inspiration for his creative work south of the Alps. During this time he soaked up many new musical experiences which played a pivotal role in the composer's artistic development. We know that Handel met his colleagues Arcangelo Corelli, Bernardo Pasquini and Alessandro Scarlatti in Rome and Venice – completing our programme!
