Francesco Durante: Magnificat
Arcangelo Corelli: Concerto grosso in D major op. 6/4
Georg Friedrich Handel: Dixit Dominus HWV 232, Concerto in B flat major HWV 288, Nisi Dominus HWV 238

When the 21-year-old George Frideric Handel travelled to Italy at the end of 1706, studying the music of his most important contemporaries south of the Alps gave him a decisive impetus for his work. In Rome he could not indulge his passion for the stage because of the papal ban on opera. Handel quickly applied the techniques he had learned while writing Italian operas to sacred music – and took the Eternal City by storm. One of the highlights was his psalm setting »Dixit Dominus«, in which resplendent theatrical passages go hand in hand with wonderful moments full of musical grace. The Akademie für Alte Musik Berlin celebrates its 40th anniversary in 2022. The ensemble has long been one of the world’s leading historically informed chamber orchestras and is a much sought-after guest in the major international concert houses. The long-standing collaboration with the RIAS Chamber Choir promises a magnificent al fresco sound that makes it possible to experience at first hand why Handel became the darling of the nobility and clergy in Rome.
