The Ahrend organ, inaugurated in 2012, with its 1,400 pipes in 22 stops is entirely in keeping with the tradition of Arp Schnitger, Erasmus Bielfeldt and Dietrich Christoph Gloger. Due to its chamber music-like sound, it is particularly suitable for the organ works of Johann Sebastian Bach. Hence Matthias Havinga, organist at the Ronde Lutherse Kerk and the Oude Kerk in Amsterdam, dedicating his entire programme to him. The Fantasia in G is one of Bach's most famous and most frequently played organ works. It is likely he composed the Sonata No. 2 in C minor as part of the trio sonatas written between 1727 and 1732 to be teaching material for his eldest son Wilhelm Friedemann. »O Mensch, bewein' dein' Sünde groß«, on the other hand, appears in his oeuvre not only as a solemn chorale prelude in the »Orgelbüchlein«, but also as the large-scale final chorus of the first part of the St Matthew Passion. And legend has it that Bach applied unsuccessfully for the post of organist at the St. Jacobi Church in Hamburg with the Fantasia and Fugue in G minor, which brings rich harmonies and great expressive power.
