Programme:
Johann Sebastian Bach: Chromatic Fantasy and Fugue in D minor BWV 903
Johannes Brahms: 6 Piano Pieces op. 118
Ludwig van Beethoven: Symphony No. 7 A major op. 92 (arrangement for piano by Franz Liszt)

Igor Levit is an extraordinary personality, both as a world-renowned pianist and as a political activist. According to the New York Times he combines »superb technical skill, an exceptionally refined sound and a deep insight into the repertoire«, in short, he is »one of the essential artists of his generation«. Away from the stage, he also considers it his duty as a musician to be an outspoken social critic on topics such as antisemitism and marginalisation. For his first piano recital at the Musikfest however, he will first and foremost let the music do the talking – and how! With the chromatic Fantasia and Fugue in D minor BWV 903, his programme features one of Bach’s most noteworthy instrumental works. As a young virtuoso, Johannes Brahms valued it as highly as Franz Liszt. Whereas Brahms created supremely complex und beautiful works out of the smallest musical unit in his Six Piano Pieces op. 118, Liszt's arrangement of Beethoven's Seventh Symphony for solo piano almost sounds like an entire orchestra - all the more so with a pianist like Igor Levit with his abuntantly rich and layered sound!
