Sunday , 27.08.23 - 5:00 pm

Programme:
Johann Sebastian Bach: Fantasia in G major (Pièce d'Orgue) BWV 572, Passacaglia in c BWV 582, Choral arrangement »Nun komm' der Heiden Heiland« BWV 659, Ricercar à 6 in c from »Ein Musikalisches Opfer« BWV 1079.
Philip Glass: »Music in Contrary Motion«, »Satyagraha. Act III - Conclusion« (arr. Michael Riesmann)

Originally built in 1927 for the Gelsenkirchen town hall, the Walcker organ found a new home in Papenburg. With its 92 stops and 7,262 pipes, it is the largest Weimar Republic organ still preserved in Germany today. A magnificent specimen and for that reason exactly the right instrument for Iveta Apkalna. She is probably Europe's best-known master of the Queen of Instruments. In 2005, she was the first organist ever to be awarded the ECHO Klassik for »Instrumentalist of the Year«, and since 2017 she has been titular organist of the Hamburg Elbphilharmonie. On the Walcker organ, she brings together two composers with 250 years of music history between them: Johann Sebastian Bach and Philip Glass. Bach, the unsurpassed master of counterpoint and harmony, meets the repetitive, almost transcendent soundscapes of Glass, one of the pioneers of minimal music. With her profound musicality and sophisticated technique and an unerring grasp of the music's effect, the Latvian organist extraordinaire brings out startling similarities and delightful contrasts in an tremendously refreshing way!
