Bubbling with energy and creativity, Manchester trio GoGoPenguin defy categorisation. Is it still jazz? Yes and no. “Actually, we're not a jazz band. We make electronic music on acoustic instruments,” says pianist Chris Illingworth when asked about the idea behind his band, which also includes drummer Jon Scott and bassist Nick Blacka. The trio, which owes its name to a tacky stuffed penguin from a flea market, does not get stuck in one genre, they rethink it instead! Described as acoustic electronica, the music is influenced by rock, jazz, minimalist music, game soundtracks and glitchy electronica. Hypnotic melodies that move between dancefloor and meditative worlds transport the audience into completely new spheres with a mixture of danceable breakbeats, delicate piano parts and fat basslines. With their unplugged electronic dance music, the trio create a club atmosphere: one moment pulsing, the next slowing down, their sound is like a skilful balancing act between such opposites as Debussy, Radiohead and Massive Attack.
