Estimated concert duration 80 minutes

Ever since Rollando Villazón made his role debut in Monteverdi’s “L’Orfeo” at the Musikfest Bremen in 2016, the Orpheus myth has continued to fascinate him. This is no surprise, after all the charismatic Mexican tenor is famous for bringing characters to life with intense emotional power and making extremes of feeling palpable. And Orpheus symbolises nothing less than the power and force of music. No wonder the hero inspired so many composers when the opera was born: from the earliest surviving opera, Jacopo Peri’s “Euridice”, first performed in Florence in 1600, to Monteverdi (1607), Luigi Rossi (1674) and Antonio Sartorio (1673). Drawing on these different musical interpretations of the Orpheus legend, Villazón follows the path of love and tragedy in all their imaginable facets. After they joined forces for “L’Orfeo” in 2016, Christina Pluhar and L’Arpeggiata return to his side, guaranteeing a lively, colourful and nuanced performance that will make the 300-year-old music sound strikingly modern.
