Program:
Gioacchino Rossini: Petite Messe solennelle

On the occasion of the 150th anniversary of the death of Gioacchino Rossini, his last great work of his old age will bring the Festival to a close: the Petite Messe solennelle. Despite its title, the work is anything but small: a full-length solemn high mass, but which Rossini originally composed in 1863/64 with a smaller instrumental ensemble for the dedication of the private chapel of a Parisian nobleman. Four years later, he prepared a full orchestra version to ward off any possible meddling with the work by another composer. Over 30 years after the composer wrote his last opera, he created one of the most beautiful and imaginative settings of the sacred Latin texts. Spiritual earnestness is combined with a wealth of melodic riches that clearly reveal the handwriting of the professional entertainer from the opera buffa. Fabio Biondi and Europa Galante proved their supreme competence as advocates of Rossini’s musical language in their fast-paced »Cenerentola« during the Bremen Music Festival 2015; now they can exploit their strengths to the full in his final stroke of genius — in serene sorrow, so to speak!
