»El Siglo de Oro«:
Francisco Guerrero: Maria Magdalene et altera Maria, Usquequo Domine
Juan Vasquez: Sana me domine
Alonso Lobo: Ave Maria
Tomás Luis de Victoria: Ave Maria, Magnificat primi toni, Requiem (Officium defunctorum) (1605)

With their impeccable intonation, exemplary voice leading, excellent diction and finely balanced voices, the Tallis Scholars, founded by Peter Phillips in 1973, are the leading ensemble for sacred vocal music of the Renaissance. After marking the 500th anniversary of the death of Josquin, the master of Franco-Flemish polyphony, with a promenade concert in three inner-city churches in Bremen, they now turn their attention to music from Spain’s Golden Age. During the reign of the Spanish Habsburg monarchs, the country experienced a political and cultural zenith. The composers on the programme reflect this heyday, with the requiem by Tomás Luis de Victoria as the final highlight. Written for the funeral of Maria of Spain, daughter of Emperor Charles V and widow of Emperor Maximilian II, it is a solemnly poignant masterpiece. With the smooth clarity and sonority of the Tallis Scholars’ voices, an experience of ethereal beauty bursting with expressiveness awaits.
