Programme:
Henry Purcell: »The Fairy Queen« (semi-staged)

For over 40 years, William Christie’s Les Arts Florissants have been one of the world's leading early music ensembles. Wanting to pass on his knowledge to the next generation, Christie founded Le Jardin des Voix in 2002. For this biennial academy, some of the most talented young baroque singers of their generation are selected to work on an opera. This year’s work is »The Fairy Queen«, Henry Purcell's loose adaptation of Shakespeare's »A Midsummer Night's Dream«. This new production will also be Les Arts Florissants' first collaboration with Mourad Merzouki. Born in 1973, the choreographer is famous around the word for his spectacular genre-defying productions combining hip-hop, contemporary dance, circus and acrobatics. For »The Fairy Queen«, he will stage the soloists of the Jardin des Voix with young dancers from New York's Juilliard School and dancers from his Compagnie Käfig in a choreography created especially for this production - an exciting encounter of baroque and hip-hop in the magical world of fairies, goblins and elves.
