Claudio Monteverdi: excerpts from the »Vespro della Beate Vergine«,
the Magnificat and the collection of psalms »Selva Morale e spirituale«
as well as motets by Alessandro Grandi and Giovanni Valentini and organ works by
Giovanni Gabrieli and Francesco Usper
Despite its waning supremacy as a mighty trading power between East and West in the 16th century, Venice remained a leading centre for art and music for a long time. Important religious holidays in particular were given an opulent musical setting in the wealthy lagoon city. With its many galleries, St. Mark’s basilica became an inspiration for Venetian polychoral music, in which vocal, instrumental and mixed groups were positioned in such a way that worshippers in the church were completely surrounded by musical splendour. Andrea Marcon and the La Cetra Baroque Orchestra & Vocal Ensemble will recreate such a festive mass following the Venetian rite. It centres around an excerpt from Claudio Monteverdi's Vespro della Beata Vergine, his eight-part Magnificat as well as psalms from his collection »Selva Morale e spirituale«. They will be framed by motets by Alessandro Grandi and Giovanni Valentini as well as organ works by Giovanni Gabrieli and Francesco Usper. Combined with the magnificent Schnitger organ, experience how Venetian vespers might have sounded in San Marco in the first half of the 17th century!
