Selected madrigals by Claudio Monteverdi, Luca Marenzio, Luzzasco Luzzaschi, Cipriano de Rore and Giovanni Pierluigi Palestrina around the Italian poet Francesco Petrarca

Francesco Petrarca (1304 - 1374) has influenced the European lyrical tradition like almost no other poet. His famous poetry cycle »Il Canzoniere« revolves around the tragic story of the love that was as deep as it was unrequited of the lyrical I for his beloved Laura. Whether the beautiful lady whom the poet claims to have met in a church in Avignon in 1327 actually existed is uncertain. But it is a fact that none of the renowned composers of the Renaissance failed to draw on this collection. The madrigal, which emerged at the beginning of the 16th century, proved particularly suitable for settings of his poems. From Cipriano de Rore to Palestrina and Monteverdi, the music was increasingly put at the service of the text and an experimental, chromatic and expressive style was developed. The Collegium Vocale Gent is famous for its flawless intonation and transparent, crystal clear sound. The hand-picked singers under the direction of Philippe Herreweghe guarantee that some of the most beautiful examples of literary lyricism in music will be transformed into an experience that goes straight to the heart!
