The Belgian trombonist Wim Becu leads the Musikfest Atelier »Wege zu Bach II« (Paths to Bach II), which aims to let young musicians experience the influences were formative for the composer, who was born in Erfurt in 1685. The paths branch out widely and are at the same time closely interwoven, travelling to five European musical metropolises. In Munich, the Franco-Flemish Orlando di Lasso was engaged from 1556 onwards. In Venice, Andrea Gabrieli made polychoral music blossom for the first time in 1566, his nephew Giovanni would develop it further. His pupil Heinrich Schütz took the genre north of the Alps to its zenith, especially in Dresden, and became - before Bach! - the first German composer of world renown. Jan Pieterszoon Sweelinck in Amsterdam, meanwhile, had a crucial influence on the development of the North German organ school, and Bach himself made a pilgrimage from Thuringia to Lübeck to visit Dieterich Buxtehude. Bach absorbed all these influences - and became the unsurpassed master of Lutheran church music!
