Antonín Dvořák: Symphony No. 8 in G major, Op. 88
George Gershwin: Excerpts from »Porgy and Bess«

The Bremer Philharmoniker and their artistic director Marko Letonja wander between worlds - on both sides of the Atlantic. Antonín Dvorák’s 8th symphony, which premiered in Prague in 1890, makes use of a very unique musical language, through which the composer distanced himself from the great models of Beethoven and Brahms. The work is steeped in Bohemian folk music and full of cheerfulness and unwavering zest for life. It became a link between the European tradition and the sounds of the New World, into which he would soon immerse himself as director of the National Conservatory of Music in New York. George Gershwin also demonstrated his versatility with his southern opera »Porgy and Bess«. By combining late romantic sounds with avant-garde techniques and Afro-American elements from jazz, spirituals and the blues, he created an American folk opera. Nicole Cabell and Eric Greene have already dazzled audiences with leading roles at the English National Opera and the Theater an der Wien. When they sing some of Gershwin's brilliant breakthrough work’s immortal tunes that have since become jazz standards in Bremen, the Glocke's stage is transformed into the famous »Catfish Row« in Charleston, South Carolina!
