Musikfest Atelier

BREMEN MUSIC FESTIVAL ATELIER

Musikfest Bremen Atelier – This format will once again feature two international academy projects: World-renowned artists connected to the festival will work on specific repertoires with selected young musicians from all over the world in one-week Ateliers.

The Atelier »Katharinas Hofmusik VI – Der junge Händel in Italien« (The young Handel in Italy) is led by a team of tutors led by Alfredo Bernardini and Alessandro Quarta. In Jever, they will continue their exploration of baroque vocal music, which they started last year, this time focusing on Handel’s cantata »Clori, Tirsi e Fileno«. It was probably first performed in 1707 in the palazzo of his Roman patron Marchese Francesco Maria Ruspoli. With its 13 arias, three duets and a final tercet as well as its colourful orchestration, it is a prime example of the numerous secular cantatas the composer wrote during his stay in Italy. Handel made »Clori, Tirsi e Fileno« so ambitious and versatile, that he would later use the cantata as a source to recycle its arias for his operas.

Tutors: Alessandro Quarta (Vocals, Continuo), Veronika Skuplik (Violin), Catherine Jones (Violoncello), Alfredo Bernardini (Oboe and artistic direction)

The Franco-Belgian bass and conductor Lionel Meunier will lead the Atelier »Wege zu Bach III« in Ganderkesee. Here the combination of period instruments and vocals with the organ as continuo-instrument are central to finding out which composers were formative for the development of Bach. Incorporating the Schnitger organ, this year's instalment focuses on the legendary Abendmusiken in Lübeck. During his tenure as organist of St. Mary's Church, Franz Tunder initially introduced these as organ-only concerts for the city's merchants, separate from the church services. His successor and son-in-law Dieterich Buxtehude developed them into a prestigious concert series with a large instrumental and vocal ensemble, which attracted substantial audiences from near and far as if by magic - including the young Bach.
