Works by Virgilio Mazzocchi, Francesco Foggia, Girolamo Frescobaldi, Bonifacio Graziani, Alessandro Melani and Giacomo Carissimi

In the first half of the 17th century, Rome was a flourishing centre of culture. Alessandro Quarta and his Concerto Romano specialise in the rich musical heritage of this era, driven by a keen sense for rare gems worth discovering. In their programme, they present an exploration of the Roman oratorio in the early Baroque, a new invention from around this time. Named after their original place of performance, the prayer hall (oratory), they deal with the suffering and passions in Biblical stories, sung in Latin or in the vernacular Italian. Conceived in the wake of the Counter-reformation, when the Vatican banned the performance of operas in the Eternal City, these oratorios were in their essence nothing more than short operas with a sacred subject matter and no mise-en-scene. Leading exponents were composers such as Giacomo Carissimi, Girolamo Frescobaldi, Francesco Foggia and Bonifacio Graziani. With a selection of their works, Alessandro Quarta and the Concerto Romano bring their operatic, dramatic and madrigalesque language back to life and take audiences on an immersive journey to the heyday of the Roman Baroque.
