The Music Festival Bremen, founded by general manager Thomas Albert on the initiative of the Bremen Senate and leading partners from commerce as a project to enhance the cultural profile of the site in 1989, is a festival of special events. Year for year, the organisers plan a programme that deliberately strives for stylistic diversity and breadth — while never straying from artistic quality as the top priority!
No matter whether opera, symphonic literature, choral and chamber music or solo recitals, whether exploring the enthralling contrasts between historical and contemporary repertoire, the very latest in interpretive insights or faithful to original practice, or moving between time-honoured and unconventional venues — the resulting projects bring the Music Festival to resounding life and its audiences enthusiastically to their feet. The concept behind the Music Festival demonstrates a pioneering spirit and an unerring sense for musical authenticity. No wonder that the seemingly familiar is rediscovered in and with the Music Festival concerts, and the encounters with lesser-known musical terrain open ears to new understanding — from classical music to jazz and world music to experimental works.
The Festival has been opened every year since 2011 with the concert evening »A Great Night Music« in venues centring around the Marktplatz, which is illuminated especially for this occasion. The primary venues for the Festival events in Bremen are the concert hall »Die Glocke«, the Musical Theater Bremen and the BLG-Forum Überseestadt; about one-third of the programme takes place in selected venues across the entire north-western region (Oldenburg, Jever, Löningen, Cloppenburg, Papenburg, Verden etc.). Music Festival Bremen — three weeks in late summer filled to overflowing with music!
