The organ in Wiefelstede, built by Christian Vater between 1729 and 1731, has an impressively rich range of sounds with its 18 stops, very much in the tradition of Schnitger. Despite having been rebuilt in the 19th century, it still boasts the largest number of original stops of any of Vater’s extant organs. On this instrument, Bart Jacobs, titular organist at the St. Michael and Gudula Cathedral in Brussels, offers a musical survey of the North German Organ School. Naturally, he starts with Heinrich Scheidemann and Samuel Scheidt, both of whom were pupils of Jan Pieterszoon Sweelinck in Amsterdam. Via Matthias Weckmann, organist at Hamburg’s St. Jacobi church from 1655, he moves on to Dieterich Buxtehude and Georg Böhm, whom Johann Christian Bach had met during his school days in Lüneburg. Jacobs concludes by looking at the development of North German organ music in the first half of the 18th century with a concert by Christoph Wolfgang Druckenmüller, who was organist in Jork in the Altes Land and at Verden Cathedral until his death in 1741.
