Programme:
Georg Friedrich Händel: Cantata »Clori, Tirsi e Fileno« HWV 96

Last year’s Musikfest Atelier was dedicated to Giovanni Battista Bononcini, this year the focus is on George Frideric Handel. After a stopover at the Gänsemarkt Opera House in Hamburg, the composer, who was born in Halle, set off for Italy in 1706 eager to learn more. When he arrived in Rome, public opera performances were forbidden by papal decree. However, in their palaces, patrons from the aristocracy and clergy alike had long held performances of oratorios and cantatas, which were veritable mini-operas. This may also be said of the cantata »Clori, Tirsi e Fileno«, in which the shepherdess Clori plays games with Tirsi, who is devoted to her, and the lighthearted Fileno. Whether passion and excitement or anger and despair, the emotions Handel evoked were so effective that he later reused arias from this cantata for »Rinaldo«, »Rodrigo«, »Agrippina« and »Acis and Galatea«. When Alfredo Bernardini and his team of tutors devote themselves to this work together with young musicians from all over the world, it will once again become clear why the young Handel soon became a much-admired darling of the Eternal City.
