Since 1990, Masaaki Suzuki and his Bach Collegium Japan have devoted themselves to historically informed performances of great works from the baroque period. The award-winning ensemble and their inspiring conductor and tireless researcher Masaaki Suzuki have long since been moving audiences far beyond japan deeply. The choir and orchestra enjoy a stellar reputation and have performed their interpretations in Amsterdam, Berlin, Paris, Hong Kong, London, Los Angeles, Melbourne, New York and Seoul, as well as at major festivals such as the BBC Proms, the Edinburgh International Festival, Flanders Festival, Hong Kong Arts Festival, Bachfest Leipzig and the New Zealand International Arts Festival. A frequent guest at the Musikfest Bremen between 1999 and 2017, Musikfest prizewinner Masaaki Suzuki also presented his son Masato Suzuki, who is successful in his own right as an organist, pianist, harpsichordist, composer and now also conductor of the BCJ. Numerous of their recordings of Bach's great choral works, motets and cantatas, as well as Mozart's Requiem and Mass in C minor and Beethoven's Missa Solemnis and Ninth Symphony, have been honoured with world-renowned awards. In 2020, a recording of harpsichord concertos conducted by Masato Suzuki and a new recording of the St Matthew Passion were honoured with a Gramophone Award.
